Qualifications / Job Requirements
  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) required; equivalent certifications (CPC, RHIA, RHIT) considered
  • Minimum 3 years of recent inpatient coding experience; experience in OB/NB, transplants, and high-complexity surgical coding preferred
  • Proficient in Epic and 3M coding systems; familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) and hospital coding workflows
  • Strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, MS-DRG and inpatient coding guidelines
  • Excellent attention to detail with ability to handle complex trauma and surgical cases independently
  • Must complete and pass the BILH Coder Assessment with a minimum score of 80%
  • Experience with clinical documentation improvement (CDI) and provider querying is a plus
Key Responsibilities
  • Perform high-quality inpatient coding for Level 1 trauma, OB/NB, transplants, surgical services, and complex medical stays
  • Assign accurate ICD-10-CM, CPT, and MS-DRG codes and ensure correct DRG assignment for inpatient encounters
  • Use Epic and 3M to code encounters, validate coding accuracy, and comply with payer and regulatory requirements
  • Collaborate with clinical teams, CDI, and case management to resolve documentation and coding discrepancies
  • Maintain productivity and quality standards (target: 1.5 charts per hour) while ensuring coding compliance
  • Participate in coding audits, quality improvement initiatives, and coding education as needed
