Outpatient Medical Coder
StartDate: 8/16/2026 Pay Rate: $28.00 - $35.00
Position Summary
The HIM Coding Specialist Outpatient provides timely and accurate coding for outpatient, ambulatory surgery, observation, recurring, rehab, and skilled care accounts to support optimal reimbursement and regulatory compliance. This role applies ICD-10-CM, CPT-4, APC assignment, NCCI edits, modifiers, and coding guidelines while maintaining quality, productivity, and turnaround standards.
Position Duties
Code outpatient, ambulatory surgery, observation, and recurring accounts
Apply ICD-10-CM, CPT-4, APC assignment, NCCI edits, and modifiers
Review clinical documentation for coding accuracy and completeness
Maintain coding work queues and productivity standards
Assist with coding denials, appeals, audits, and reimbursement issues
Participate in coding quality reviews
Train and mentor new coding staff as needed
Support AR reduction initiatives
Maintain coding credentials and continuing education requirements
Partner with physicians, HIM staff, finance, quality, and patient safety departments
Assist with software testing, policy development, and process improvement initiatives
Ensure compliance with HIPAA and all applicable coding regulations
Minimum Required Qualifications
RHIA, RHIT, or CCS required
Associate's or Bachelor's degree (or exam-eligible graduate)
Knowledge of ICD-10-CM and CPT coding
Basic computer proficiency
Strong communication and organizational skills
Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
Preferred Qualifications
Acute care outpatient coding experience
Ambulatory surgery coding experience
Observation coding experience
Experience with APC assignment
Experience utilizing NCCI edits and modifiers
Experience with coding denials and appeals
Experience with rehabilitation and skilled nursing coding
LENGTH OF ASSIGNMENT : 13 Weeks (Potential Extension)
SHIFT / HOURS PER WEEK : Monday-Friday | 40 Hours Per Week
SYSTEMS : EMR, Outlook, VitalWare, Lawson, Encoder Software, Excel
START DATE : ASAP
