Position Summary At Stony Brook Medicine, the Experienced Outpatient Medical Record Coder will select and assign accurate codes from coding systems including ICD‑10‑CM/PCS, CPT and HCPCS codes. Responsibilities Assign ICD‑10‑CM/PCS, CPT and HCPCS codes with modifiers for services provided in the facility environment. Review the medical record and all applicable documentation to determine the appropriate codes for services and diagnoses. Utilize coding resources and reference materials to ensure accuracy in coding for all assigned services. Follow HIPAA regulations and uphold a high standard around privacy requirements. Demonstrate technical competence to use the facility encoder as it interfaces with the hospital mainframe and/or EMR in a remote setting. Demonstrate proficiency with Microsoft Office, Citrix and Adobe Reader, using required computer systems with minimal assistance. Maintain knowledge of laws, regulations and industry guidance that impact compliant coding. Meet all coder productivity and quality goals. Ensure confidentiality of data contained in medical records in accordance with institutional policies and procedures. Participate in special projects to support and promote the HIM department. Perform additional duties as assigned. Required Qualifications Associate’s degree plus at least 5 years of outpatient facility coding experience and CCS, CCS‑P or CPC certification, or in lieu of a degree at least 8 years of experience and certification, or at least 10 years of experience. Preferred Qualifications 5 or more years of facility outpatient procedure coding experience. Bachelor’s degree in a non‑clinical health care field (HIM, health sciences, health informatics). Facility coding experience in an academic medical center. Cancer center injection/infusion coding experience. Experience coding emergency room observation encounters. Experience coding injections and infusions for facilities. Experience with surgical procedure coding across all specialties. Compensation and Benefits Anticipated salary range: $77,000 – $97,653 per year. Additional annual supplemental pay may include location pay for UUP, CSEA & PEF full‑time positions ($4,000).
