Overview The following statements reflect the general duties considered necessary to describe the principal functions of the job as identified and shall not be considered as a detailed description of all the work requirements, which may be inherent in the position. A coder 1 is responsible for utilizing coding policies and procedures in evaluating the diagnostic information within the medical record for determination of accurate APC assignment for reimbursement of services rendered and for verifying/abstracting clinical information into the organization's health database. A coder also makes medical necessity determinations for Medicare and Medicaid out-patient testing utilizing the appropriate software. A coder 1 functions under the direct authority and supervision of the Coding Supervisor and Director of Health Information Management.
