Professional Medical Coding Supervisor

Job Description

The Professional Coding Supervisor provides critical supervisory leadership across all professional (physician) coding services within the Revenue Cycle. This role ensures compliant, accurate coding practices while supporting daily operations and monthly revenue goals. As a leader, you will oversee coding quality, productivity, workflow optimization, and staff development, working collaboratively with providers, revenue integrity, compliance, and IT partners to maintain peak operational health. Key Responsibilities Team Leadership & Operations: Supervise daily operations of the professional coding team to ensure accurate, compliant coding while meeting quality and productivity benchmarks. Workflow & Queue Management: Monitor, work, and reconcile professional coding and claim edit work queues daily to keep workflows current, balanced, and accurate. Manage workload distribution and staff allocation to meet service-level expectations. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with the Outpatient Physician Coding Educator, Director of Revenue Integrity, physician leadership, practice managers, CDI, compliance, and revenue cycle teams to ensure complete documentation and accurate CPT, ICD-10-CM, and modifier assignment. Revenue Integrity & Denial Management: Support denial prevention and resolution efforts by reviewing coding-related rejections and denials, identifying trends, and recommending corrective actions. Staff Development & Onboarding: Facilitate onboarding for newly hired certified professional coders, including training, mentoring, skills assessments, coaching, and performance evaluations. Create and manage work schedules and attendance. Continuous Education: Coordinate education related to CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, modifier usage, and annual code set updates. Provide ongoing training regarding payer policies and regulatory changes. Systems & Policy Optimization: Partner with EHR and IT optimization teams to stay current on system enhancements, template changes, and workflow updates impacting professional coding. Assist in developing and maintaining professional coding policies and documentation standards. Leadership Reporting: Communicate, elevate, and track provider coding and documentation issues to HIM/Coding and revenue cycle leadership as appropriate. Qualifications & Requirements Education & Experience Required: Associate degree (An additional 2 years of related experience may substitute for the degree). Required Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of professional (physician) coding experience. Preferred Experience: Five (5) or more years of coding experience with prior team lead or supervisory experience. Required Certifications Must hold at least one of the following credentials at the time of hire: Certified Professional Coder ( CPC ) Certified Coding Specialist ( CCS ) Certified Coding Specialist – Physician Based ( CCS-P ) Preferred Skills & Core Competencies Technical Expertise: Strong, comprehensive knowledge of ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and official compliant coding guidelines. Systems: Hands‑on experience with the Epic HIM coding platform is highly preferred; proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. Soft Skills: Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse coding team and communicate effectively with clinical leadership. Growth Mindset: Willingness to pursue ongoing education, apply updates from coding audits/webinars, and obtain additional coding credentials.
