Job Description
Edits and reviews captured charges and medical documentation to determine appropriate codes and modifiers for services rendered in office and hospital settings.
Reviews outpatient and inpatient procedure reports, abstracts appropriate procedure codes, and enters charges into electronic medical records.
Communicates documentation discrepancies with coding support staff and coding supervisor.
Creates patient charts and enters demographics and insurance information into electronic medical records when applicable.
Verifies data entry of patient demographics, insurance, and hospital charges for accuracy.
Accurately enters and attaches insurance and authorizations to patient encounters in electronic medical record.
Serves as a coding resource and assists with coding questions as needed.
Assists coding supervisor with escalated coding questions from team members and physician practices.
Maintains open communication with coding team and coding supervisor. Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Substantial knowledge of CPT, ICD-10, HCPCS, and modifiers for outpatient and inpatient surgical procedures. [Required]
Substantial knowledge of NCCI, MU, MUE edits and bundling guidelines. [Required]
Knowledgeable with Microsoft software. [Required]
Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication skills. [Required]
Ability to effectively operate equipment such as PC, web/tele-conference. [Required]
Current knowledge of E&M and surgical coding. [Preferred]
Ability to explain required documentation needs to physicians and staff via EMR system. [Preferred]

High School Grad or Equiv [Required]

2+ years of experience in physician based coding for both e&M (outpatient/inpatient) and surgical procedures [Required]
