Position Summary The coder/abstractor supports the Cancer Data Registrar to meet Registry criteria established by the State of Connecticut and the American College of Surgeons, Commission on Cancer. This includes but is not limited to: abstracting relevant information from the medical record and entering the data accurately into the Registry software program, participating in quality assurance activities to guarantee the accuracy of the data, supporting tumor boards and oncology committee as necessary.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities Under direct supervision:
- Participates in active case finding of reportable malignancies and benign conditions as determined by the State of Connecticut and the National Cancer Database.
- Accurately abstracts pertinent demographic, diagnostic work-up, stage, extent of disease and treatment from patient's medical record.
- Completes abstracts and other tasks in a timely fashion, e.g. maintain the record of tumor board recommendation current within two weeks and obtains adequate information to complete the abstract within one month.
- Participates in monthly peer review to assure accuracy, timeliness and efficiency in abstracting.
- Provides support to Tumor Conferences as required including but not limited to case identification, agenda preparation and recording and communicating recommendations.
- Consults with the Cancer Data Registrar or Medical Director to resolve all instances of conflict that lack clarity in staging, abstracting and coding.
- Maintains a current and working knowledge of the Cancer Data Registry software to assure the efficiency and accuracy of the Registry.
- Provides support to the Oncology Committee including agenda development, notices and minutes in the absence of the Cancer Data Registrar.

Minimum Qualifications- High school graduate or equivalent
- Health information billing/coding experience
Preferred Qualifications- Associates Degree
- Ability to work independently
- String communication skills
