Duties

Help
  • Utilize hospital automated patient health record related software such as, the Military Health System (MHS) GENESIS to retrieve various reports and input data.
  • Serve as Medical Records Technician (MRT), functioning primarily as an inpatient/ outpatient records coder.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and third-party insurance requirements in utilizing the International Code of Diseases-10 Clinical Modifications (ICD-10-CM), and Procedure Coding System (PCS) coding books.
  • Assign specific codes to medical records, sequencing and determining codes to accurately reflect the resources and procedures used in the care of the patients.
  • Use specialized procedures and methods to correct and amend records.
  • Code complicated medical records having diagnostic, surgical and therapeutic procedures on specific DRGs that are identified as difficult to classify.
  • Identify and document any incident which may denote a potential compensatory event or questionable breach of quality of care delivered.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. GS-05 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes utilizing a medical software system to extract or transmit data for coding workflow ICT 10 and procedures from the medical cards. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

OR

Education: Four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.

GS-06 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes, includes managing medical records and reviewing medical coding such as, International Classification of Diseases (ICD- latest version), American Medical Association Current Procedural. Terminology (CPT) codes, Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS), Current Dental Terminology (CDT) codes, Diagnostic Related Groups (DRG's), or other code taxonomies. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

OR

Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as Medical transcriptionist, Health information, and Healthcare IT specialist.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages.

NOTE: This is a developmental position. Management is selecting this position at the GS-05 or GS-07 grade levels. If selected at the GS-05 grade level the incumbent maybe non-competitively be promoted to the target grade level GS-06.

Highly desired candidates will posses a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or similar certification.

Education

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
