Certified Medical Coder

The Certified Medical Coder is responsible for reviewing all patient charts to ensure proper and accurate coding per CMS guidelines and payer requirements.

As part of the essential functions of this role, the Certified Medical Coder:

  • Reviews all patient charts, interprets medical information, and confirms that appropriate ICD-10 and CPT/HCPCS codes and modifiers are assigned.
  • Ensures all possible codes have been captured within claims, and that all services being performed are coded to maximize billing.
  • Queries providers for clarification on documentation to accurately assign all codes per CMS guidelines and coding rules.
  • Assists all providers with any medical coding questions or issues that arise.
  • Communicates with all providers to ensure that they have the most current and accurate information to correctly chart on the patients.

Qualified candidate will have a high school diploma/GED; Associates or higher preferred. Certification in Medical Coding required. (Through AAPC or other reliable source), prior experience using EMR software, at least 1 year of medical coding experience required; 3+ preferred, knowledge in one or all: Primary Care, Podiatry, STI, Pediatric, and Infectious Disease. Billing experience, coding experience or familiarity with one or more of the following is preferred: Articles 28 (Primary Care), Article 31(OMH - Office of Mental Health NYS), or Article 32(OASAS - Office of Abuse and Substance Use Services); awareness of and sensitivity to the issues and health disparities faced by underserved populations is essential.

Job type: Full-time; hybrid schedule

Required Education/Certification : High school diploma/GED; Associates or higher preferred, Medical Coding Certification through AAPC or other reliable source

Required Experience: at least 1 year of medical coding experience, 3+ years preferred; knowledge of Primary Care, STI, Podiatry, Pediatrics, & Infectious Diseases preferred. Billing experience, coding experience or familiarity with one or more of the following is preferred: Articles 28 (Primary Care), Article 31(OMH - Office of Mental Health NYS), or Article 32(OASAS - Office of Abuse and Substance Use Services)

This position is posted with a salary range. The actual rate of pay offered will be based on a variety of individualized factors, including but not limited to a candidate's skills, relevant experience, educational background, internal equity, and market considerations.
