Essential functions for this position include ensuring that codes are assigned correctly and sequenced appropriately as per government and insurance regulations, complying with all medical coding guidelines, following up and clarifying any unclear information with the rendering provider, conducting ad-hoc audits to ensure fidelity to coding guidelines, and being the relevant expert for Southwest Network on accurate and efficient coding practices. Analyze medical records and identify documentation deficiencies.
Nonessential functions include following policies and procedures, adhering to the requirements of the Corporate Compliance Program, ensuring confidentiality of verbal and written information in accordance with HIPAA standards and Southwest Network policy, and adhering to the legal, ethical, and professional guidelines adopted by Southwest Network. Other duties as assigned.
Education and/or experience, licensure, and certification: Associate degree in medical coding or successful completion of a certification program required. Must have a minimum of 1 year of experience working in multi-specialty coding. Must maintain a valid Arizona state fingerprint clearance card. Must have and maintain a valid Arizona driver's license. Must be at least 21 years of age.
Knowledge, ability, and skills: Strong understanding of medical terms, in-depth understanding of medical coding guidelines, excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to maintain a high level of integrity and confidentiality of medical information. Must be competent in the use of electronic medical records software, as well as in the use of a computer, printer, copier, and telephone. Preferred typing skills of 25 to 40 WPM. Occasional use of fax machines, security systems, and other office equipment. Must be highly proficient in the use of Microsoft Office software, including Outlook, Word, and Excel. Must be able to effectively use the internet and various web browsers.
Working conditions and driving: Travel between Southwest Network sites as well as in the community is required. Must have a registered and reliable vehicle that meets Arizona state law standards and meets the insurance standards of Southwest Network. This is a hybrid position. Work is performed in the community as well as an office setting; must be able to move about; occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions. Must be able to remain in a stationary position for long periods of time and position self to reach items under or above desks, in storage, or in areas not easily accessible; some lifting also required. Evening or weekend hours required on an as-needed basis.
