Job Description Job Title: Remote ICD-10 Outpatient Coder, AAPC Certified, Short-Term AI Pilot Project (1099)
Job Type: Contract, 1099, Remote, Part-Time
Pay: $40 to $45 per hour, depending on experience
Location: Remote, US-based only
About the Project Nightingale's List is sourcing AAPC-certified outpatient coders for a short-term pilot project with a healthcare AI company. This is a contract opportunity to support an exciting initiative comparing US coder performance against established benchmarks, with strong potential to grow into a larger ongoing engagement based on pilot results.
What You'll Be Doing - Reviewing clinical transcripts and assigning accurate ICD-10-CM codes
- Identifying primary diagnoses and secondary conditions
- Highlighting sentence-level text spans that support each coding decision
- Completing 5 test cases followed by approximately 20 production cases
- Working within the client's coding platform, full training and gold standard examples provided
- Estimated 30 to 45 minutes per case, roughly 13 to 19 hours of paid labeling work over the pilot
Required Qualifications - AAPC certification required, CPC strongly preferred (CCS-P or CRC also considered)
- Currently working in US outpatient medical coding
- Strong experience with ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and HCC coding
- Familiarity with US clinical documentation standards
- Experience with chart review and audit workflows
- High attention to detail for evidence-based coding
- Comfortable working with transcript-style clinical notes
- Reliable internet and a quiet remote workspace
- Must be US-based and authorized to work in the US
Preferred Qualifications - 5 plus years of outpatient coding experience across mixed specialties
- Prior experience with chart audit or QA review
- Comfort working in unfamiliar coding platforms with new SOPs
Engagement Details - 1099 independent contractor
- Pilot starts week of ~April 21, 2026
- Time tracked through client platform during active labeling only, training and SOP review time is unpaid
- Paid weekly via direct deposit
- Potential for ongoing work if pilot performance is strong
