Job Description
This position is responsible for coding and billing of professional medical fees for all billing providers in the Department of Medicine, Division of Nephrology. The Clinical Coder III extracts billable services from patient charts, applies appropriate CPT and ICD‑10 codes, and enters services into the EPIC billing system. They work closely with Nephrology faculty, fellows, residents, and other providers to educate on correct coding, documentation for reimbursement, and compliance with federal and state regulations.
Essential Functions
Review provider progress and procedure reports through EPIC for extraction of billable services for all patients (inpatients and observation short stays) for Nephrology, including inpatient attending and consultation services.
Perform highly specialized coding abstraction for evaluation and management services and dialysis procedures and act as an expert in Nephrology.
Apply appropriate CPT and ICD‑10 codes and confirm adequate teaching provider documentation.
Enter charge data into EPIC Resolute, ensuring clean claim submission and working on edits generated by Charge Review.
Resolve all denials by working closely with University of Florida Physicians to maximize revenue and prevent errors. Assist other divisions in coding and billing as needed.
Provide feedback to providers on accurate documentation, reimbursement maximization, and compliance.
Develop and maintain documentation standards for coding, create training materials, and schedule educational sessions with providers.
Review and validate that provider note templates are set up with compliant drop‑down selections.
Research coding issues through professional associations, payer guidelines, and coding networks.
Inform supervisors and faculty of important coding and reimbursement changes.
Provide guidance to other coders as a coding resource and expert.
Miscellaneous Duties
Prioritize work assignments based on urgency and deadlines.
Attend continuing education courses, seminars, conferences, and meetings to increase knowledge and maintain coding credential.
Work cooperatively with departmental billing staff to resolve backlog and provide backup coverage during vacations and illnesses.
Serve as a liaison to internal and external entities, including the Department of Medicine, other divisions within the Department of Medicine, hospitalist physicians, University of Florida Physicians, Compliance Office, referring physicians, patients, and their families, and represent the Division, Department, and University in a positive, courteous, and professional manner.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent and five years of experience in professional medical coding, with experience in two or three clinical specialties.
Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute for required experience.
Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) certification; or one of the following: Certified Coding Specialist (CCS‑P), Certified Coding Assistant (CCA), or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA).
Preferred Qualifications
Ability to work independently.
Ability to handle confidential material in compliance with HIPAA.
Proficiency in data entry.
Salary
$25.38 - $29.00 per hour.
