Job Summary
To provide advanced skills necessary for proper coding of all pertinent diagnoses and procedures and to provide optimal DRG assignment after thorough review of the medical record and analysis of DRG options.
Essential Job Functions
Select low bill (> $150k) short stay records from EPIC WQ according to priority.
Review all federally insured and other patient discharge encounters for accurate coding and sequencing of diagnoses and procedures.
Correctly assign ICD‑10‑CM diagnoses and ICD‑10‑PCS procedure codes and enter appropriate codes into EPIC Encoder.
Identify responsible staff and resident physicians for each procedure coded.
Always protect confidentiality of patient information.
Participate in section meetings and office in‑services.
Attend and participate in coding education sessions.
Keep coding knowledge and skills current through continuing education activities and reviewing pertinent literature.
Obtain required CEUs for certification and complete any required education.
Work on coding‑related charge reviews/claim edits daily to ensure timely and accurate billing within filing deadlines.
Responsible for productivity and quality standards to adhere to coding compliance and federal regulations.

Adhere to internal controls and reporting structure.

Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
Working Environment and Equipment
Standard office environment at UTMB’s main campus or approved remote location.
Occasional travel may be required.
Required Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications
Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) – AHIMA
Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) – AHIMA
Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) – AHIMA

Preferred Qualifications
Experience communicating, training, and educating providers to proficiency.
Knowledge of coding guidelines, anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, medical terminology, and medical abbreviations.
Basic knowledge of IP DRG/PCS coding.
