Job Summary
Responsible for reviewing clinical documentation and diagnostic results as appropriate to extract data and apply appropriate ICD-10-CM/CPT4 codes and modifiers for billing, internal and external reporting, research, and regulatory compliance. Accurately code conditions and procedures as documented in the ICD-10-CM & CPT4 Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting. Typically reports to Coding Manager
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Associate Degree in a medical area preferred
Licenses/Certifications (one required):
- Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
- Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
- Certified Medical Coder (CMC)
- Certified Coding Associate (CCA)
Experience/Skills:
- 2+ years of outpatient E/M coding experience required
- 2+ years of Neurosurgery (preferred)
- 6 months of HCC experience preferred
- Ability to code Neurology for physicians
- EPIC system experience preferred
- Strong communication and query skills with providers and leadership
Required:
- TB Skin test or chest x-ray (current)
- Transcripts of highest level of education.
Key Responsibilities - Assign accurate codes for diagnoses, procedures, and treatments per ICD-10-CM/CPT4 guidelines
- Ensure compliance with coding standards, payer rules, and ethical guidelines (AHIMA/AAPC)
- Extract and enter clinical data for billing and reporting purposes
- Collaborate with providers and staff to clarify documentation and coding questions
- Support continuous improvement in accuracy, productivity, and compliance
