Job Description

Medical Coder - Part Time (Hours Flexible) Poplar Springs Hospital is a 183‑bed acute care and residential facility located in Petersburg, Virginia, 20 minutes south of Richmond. The hospital offers behavioral and psychological treatment for adults and adolescents through various programs. Responsibilities The Medical Coder works under general supervision in the Medical Records Department. Accurately assigns diagnostic and procedural codes in a timely manner for all inpatient and partial patient charts. Prepares charts for quarterly audit, attends corporate coding training sessions, identifies needs for backing up tasks, problem‑solves for Medical Records staff, backs up the Director in her absence, and performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications Position Requirements Medical Records Coder Certification Required (CPC, CCS, RHIA, RHIT) Education / Experience High school graduate or GED Two (2) years’ experience in a psychiatric inpatient hospital preferred or a combination of education and experience sufficient to complete job tasks. Proficient in ICD‑9‑CM and CPT coding and DRG optimization. Updates/enters computerized patient abstract in the HMS system. Handles all phone calls related to coding issues. Requires critical thinking, problem‑solving skills, meeting deadlines, and ability to work independently and as part of a team. General Requirements Must be at least 21 years of age per Commonwealth of Virginia regulation. Must have patience, tact, cheerful disposition and enthusiasm. Good communication skills; must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English. Basic clerical skills and experience with office equipment (telephone, copier, fax, etc.). Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to problem‑solve and accept feedback. Willingness to interact with patients with varying levels of cognitive functioning.
