COMPANY OVERVIEW

Michigan Kidney Consultants (MKC), P.C. is Southeast Michigan’s largest board-certified nephrology group. Our physicians and nurse practitioners are dedicated to providing the latest, most advanced diagnostics and treatments available for kidney disease and end-stage renal failure. MKC offers appointments in eight locations in greater Detroit, Michigan, including Troy, Royal Oak, Southfield, Novi, Pontiac, Clarkston, Rochester Hills and Sterling Heights.

All of our physicians are board certified in the sub-specialty of nephrology as well as internal medicine. A nephrologist is a physician who has been educated and trained in kidney disease, kidney transplantation, and dialysis therapy.

 

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Billing Manager is responsible for the day-to-day billing department operations. This person should be skilled in all aspects of billing processes and serve as the point-person for all escalations. The billing manager should be highly organized and detail-oriented, with outstanding analytical and problem-solving abilities. This person must have experience in people-management and leadership.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

· Takes the lead in selecting and hiring new billers

· Trains new hires is the use of Acumen software

· Counsels, mentors, guide team members to work efficiently and accurately in performing their jobs

· May handle and/or supervise data entry for charges to patients and insurance companies for office visits, procedures and hospital visits

· Posting of insurance and patient payments to patient accounts in the system

· Perform crossover billing as necessary and trains billing team to do the same

· Re-works rejected or underpaid claims

· Registers with new insurers

· Communicates between billing office and third-party associates regarding charges and payments

· Delegates department workload daily or as needed

Serves as a point of escalation in communication with patients in sensitive and/or difficult situations

· Reviews and approves refund requests

· Reviews patient requests for statement adjustments and payment arrangements

· Enforces procedures for collection of past-due accounts

· Maintains confidentiality of all patient information

· Maintains proper staff schedule for the day-to-day workload and anticipates coverage for staff vacation and illness

 

QUALIFICATION AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS

· Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such actions

· Must be able to communicate effectively with staff in order to understand their needs related to workload, training, mentorship, etc.

· Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with staff, patients, family members, visitors, insurance agencies, government agencies

· Must be organized and detail-orientated

· Must have a professional demeanor and communication style, at all times

· Familiar with computers and basic programs such as Word and Excel. Prior experience with a medical billing system is required.

· Understanding of the billing system (Acumen) and ability to troubleshoot and correct posting and entry errors

· Understanding of billing requirements of insurers and familiarity with diagnosis and procedure codes for nephrology

· Must be able to utilize analytical and problem-solving skills

· Must have valid automobile insurance and reliable transportation or alternative provisions.

· Maintains confidentiality of organizational and patient records.

· Fluent in English (reading, writing, speaking)

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

· High school graduate or equivalent; some college preferred

  • Preferred a minimum of five (5) to seven (7) years’ experience in medical billing
  • Previous supervisory experience required

· Proficient knowledge of medical terminology

· Required to be a certified coder

  • Prior Nephrology or Dialysis billing experience a plus
  • Knowledge of physician/AP credentialing a plus
  • Become proficient in Acumen 2.0 EPIC software
  • Become member of billing societies for ongoing, continued education
  • Willingness to attend Nephrology seminars on billing education
