General Summary

The medical coder ensures that services are billed correctly according to the American Medical Association (AMA) and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) guidelines. This position involves insurance credentialing and educating providers and staff on coding and billing standards. Routine chart audits are conducted to maintain compliance and accuracy.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assign ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS Level II codes to finalized medical documentation to create accurate medical claims.
  • Abstract specific data from patient records to determine appropriate claim modifiers.
  • Query providers for clarification when documentation is unclear or incomplete, requesting addendums as needed.
  • Stay current with coding guidelines from ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS Level II, AMA, CMS, and other federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Adhere to AAPC's Standards of Ethical Coding and corporate compliance guidelines.
  • Monitor provider documentation for timely completion and notify management of delays beyond designated turnaround times.
  • Maintain productivity standards and provide weekly summary reports to management.
  • Maintain annual certification through AAPC or AHIMA and complete required continuing education units (CEUs).

Education

High school diploma or equivalent is required.

Experience

At least one year of medical coding experience is preferred.

Certification/License

Certification as a medical coder through AAPC or AHIMA is required.

Mental/Physical Requirements

This role requires considerable mental concentration and attention to detail. The ability to handle confidential information with discretion is essential. The position involves long periods of sitting, with some standing, walking, reaching, bending, and stooping. Good vision, finger dexterity, and full use of hands and arms are necessary. Approximately 80% of the work time is spent at a computer. Excellent customer service skills and patience in difficult situations are important.

Working Conditions

This is a remote position requiring a private home office environment compliant with HIPAA regulations. Equipment will be provided.
