Position Summary We are seeking experienced
Medical Coders III specializing in
Outpatient and Emergency Department (ED) coding to support the
Defense Health Agency (DHA). The selected candidates will accurately assign
CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10-CM, and modifiers for outpatient encounters, same-day surgeries, and emergency room visits. Additional inpatient coding assignments may be required as directed.

Minimum QualificationsEducation: Completion of one of the following:
- Associate's degree or higher in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or biological sciences.
- University certificate in medical coding.
- At least 30 semester hours of university/college credits that include relevant coursework (anatomy/physiology, medical terminology, health information management, and/or pharmacology).
- Completion of an AAPC or AHIMA coding certification preparation course for professional services or facility coding.
- Advanced training course for medical technicians, hospital corpsmen, medical service specialists, or equivalent military medical training.
Certifications: At least one recognized professional coding certification, such as:
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), or Certified Coding Specialist - Physician (CCS-P)
AND one of the following: - Certified Outpatient Coder (COC), RHIT, RHIA, or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
AND one of the following recognized E&M coding certifications: - Certified Evaluation and Management Coder (CEMC) or Certified Evaluation and Management Auditor (CEMA)
Additional Requirements: - U.S. Citizenship (required for DHA contract eligibility).
- Demonstrated experience in Outpatient or Emergency Department (ED) coding (minimum 3 years preferred).
Core Duties - Accurately assign CPT, HCPCS, ICD-10-CM, and modifiers for Outpatient and Emergency Department (ED) encounters.
- Review documentation for ambulatory procedures, outpatient clinics, same-day surgeries, and ER visits to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Identify and resolve documentation inconsistencies, ambiguities, or discrepancies that may affect accurate coding.
- Collaborate with providers, auditors, and clinical staff to support coding compliance and education.
- Provide feedback and guidance to clinical staff on documentation requirements supporting accurate code assignment.
- Perform due diligence in ethically and appropriately researching or interpreting existing DHA/DoD coding guidance.
- Utilize MHS computer systems to remotely access patient records and assign codes in support of other Military Treatment Facilities (MTFs).
- Achieve and maintain DHA coding productivity and accuracy standards.
- May provide support for inpatient or other coding assignments as directed.
Preferred Experience - Experience with MHS Genesis or other Military Health System applications.
- Prior experience coding for the Defense Health Agency (DHA) or other federal healthcare contracts.
