Medical Billing Coding Specialist Position Overview:

The Medical Billing Coding Specialist is responsible for billing and analyzing procedures and modifiers to troubleshoot and resolve billing issues, rejections, denials, and appeals. The Specialist will work as part of a cross-functional team to ensure all services provided by the Refugee program are billed in a timely and accurate manner and responsible for remaining up to date on billing guidelines. The individual handles sensitive and confidential information appropriately and in compliance with HIPAA regulations.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Analyze billing procedures and modifiers to resolve billing issues, rejections, denials, and appeals.
  • Work with Medicaid and all other governmental and commercial insurance carriers to resolve claim errors.
  • Review billing charges and other data for accuracy and potential reimbursement enhancement.
  • Obtain from applicable providers, clinic, and support staff complete diagnosis information to ensure proper assignment of codes.
  • Respond to questions from staff, insurance carriers, and clients.
  • Run, review, and summarize reports for billing, reimbursement, and accounts receivable.
  • Work collaboratively with clinical and health information systems staff regarding billing/coding revisions in the electronic billing system.
  • Work as part of a cross-functional team to ensure all services provided are coded and billed in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Provide feedback on operational improvements to enhance the efficiency of charge capture to reduce denials and optimize overall reimbursement.

Requirements

Education
  • High School diploma or GED equivalency

Experience:
  • One (1) year of medical billing & coding denial resolution experience

Licensure:
  • Current Billing and Coding Certificate such as Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Certified Medical Coder (CMC)
  • Valid Driver’s License (Texas upon hire)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal & written)
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and foster teamwork in a diverse environment
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality when dealing with sensitive information
  • Ability to work well with public and staff members
  • Knowledge of medical insurance billing procedures, third-party reimbursement and medical terminology
  • Must use your personal mobile device for our Multifactor Authentication process

Preferences

Experience:
  • Six (6) months of experience billing and coding using an Electronic Medical Records system

General Information

Position Type, and Typical Hours of Work:
  • Full-Time | Grant-funded
  • Monday - Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm
  • Other days and hours as necessary.

Work Environment:
  • This job operates in a professional office environment.
  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Physical Demands:
  • This is a largely sedentary role; however, some duties would require the ability to lift up to 20 pounds and bending & standing for periods at a time.
