Job Description


  • Review and interpret explanation of benefits (EOB) from insurance carriers to post appropriate payment, adjustment, and denial codes.
  • Accurately and timely post payments received from third-party payers and patients through electronic and paper remittances, online payment portal, and patient payments to patient accounts and ensure that accounts are properly balanced and reconcile payment data to ensure consistency and accuracy.
  • Post zero pays received from third-party payers through electronic and paper remittances.
  • Identify and research discrepancies in payment postings and work with insurance companies to resolve any issues.
  • Reconciling unapplied account balances.
  • Sort and distribute mail to appropriate parties.
  • Managing electronic remittance advice and insurance correspondences.
  • Understand and follow payer guidelines and policies related to payment processing.
  • Maintain/run daily, weekly and monthly payment logs and reports and ensure completeness and accuracy of data.
  • Preparation of bank deposits.
  • Process refunds on a bi-weekly basis or as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with HIPAA and other regulatory requirements related to payment processing.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and work with management to implement changes, such Front Office failing to collect deductibles or copayments and While processing write-offs and adjustments.
  • Investigate unusual contractual adjustments. Communicate problematic trends to the Operations Manager.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
  • P2+ years of experience in payment posting/allocating payments per EOBs to patient accounts for commercial, contract, and government payers
  • Experience in large balances/payments within a hospital or physician setting highly preferred.
  • Knowledge of accounting principles and computer functions.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA regulations and patient confidentiality.
  • Experience with EPIC Electronic Health Records preferred.

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Must be able to work independently and as part of a team to meet critical deadlines, communicate effectively with patients and insurance companies, and maintain the confidentiality of patient information in accordance with posting guidelines, organization policy & procedure, and HIPAA regulations.
  • Must be able to interpret EOBs, and identify and reconcile unapplied account balances where necessary.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to navigate multiple computer screens and browsers quickly and accurately.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Use of mouse, keyboard and headset.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
