Job Description

Summary:

The coding specialist, utilizing coding skills and clinical knowledge reviews the medical record. Accurate ICD?10 diagnosis and CPT procedure codes are then assigned based on the documentation in the medical record, which directly impacts reimbursement. Queries the clinician when needed for clarification of the documentation.

Responsibilities:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • (60%)* Assigns accurate ICD?CM diagnosis and CPT codes in a timely manner for all appropriate encounters using CMS and American Hospital Guidelines, CPT Assistant and following AHIMA code of ethics.
  • (30%)* Utilizes clinical knowledge to interact with physicians/providers on a regular basis to assist in improving documentation within the medical record to accurately reflect the severity of illness and level of care provided.
  • (10%)* Demonstrates willingness to participate in continuing education to enhance coding knowledge.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Meets established productivity guidelines.

Other duties as assigned.

Certifications and Licensures:

RHIA - Registered Health Info Analyst Preferred

RHIA or RHIT within 6 months of hire or transfer

Required Education:

Associate's degree is required

EXPERIENCE, TRAINING AND SKILLS:

Coding experience from an AHIMA approved internship required or successfully completed an independent study program offered by AHIMA. Knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy preferred.

Written, oral, organizational and interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.

Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.

Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.

Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).

Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.

Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MyMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.

Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.

Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.

Physical Demand Level: Sedentary. Must be able to occasionally (0?33% of the workday) lift or carry 0-10 lbs.
