BASIC FUNCTION: University of Pittsburgh Physicians (UPP) is seeking an experienced plastic surgery coder to serve as the primary liaison between our plastic surgeons and the revenue cycle management (RCM) team. This pivotal role will ensure accurate coding, identify billing opportunities, and provide expert guidance and training to surgeons. The ideal candidate will have 5-10 years of experience specifically in plastic surgery billing and coding and may manage a small team of coders pending physician caseload.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Physician Liaison
- Act as the primary point of contact for plastic surgeons, addressing all coding and billing inquiries.
- Collaborate closely with physicians to ensure accurate documentation and compliant coding practices.
- Proactively identify areas for coding improvement and communicate opportunities for optimized reimbursement.
Revenue Cycle Support and Coordination
- Partner with the RCM team to ensure timely and accurate claim submissions.
- Review operative reports and patient records to ensure the correct CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS codes are applied.
- Identify and rectify coding discrepancies to minimize denials and maximize revenue capture.
- Prioritize billing sequence such that the most pressing/nearing deadline for submission claims are completed first prior to sending documentation to RCM team.
- Manage coding related denials and edits process, analyzing denial reasons and implementing changes to reduce number of denials going forward.
Training and Education
- Provide one-on-one and group training sessions for physicians on proper documentation and coding practices.
- Develop and deliver ongoing education to keep surgeons informed of coding updates and regulatory changes.
Team Management (if applicable)
- Potentially, oversee and mentor a small team of coders, ensuring accuracy, productivity, and continuous development.
- Potentially conduct regular audits of coding work and provide feedback to maintain high performance standards.
Reporting
- Work with manager to define KPIs for role.
- Create monthly, quarterly, and annual reports showing KPI performance.
- Show reporting on quarter over quarter and year over year KPI performance.
POSITION DETAILS
- Plastic surgery specific experience is required
- Position is remote but travel to UPP could be required a few times a year
- Full time availability required, day to day hours are flexible and to be discussed with hiring manager
- Position is with the plastic surgery department but team members receive UPMC benefits
