Job Description

This role assists our customers in performing, auditing and validating medical coding while complying with accepted standards and legal requirements. Your work ensures that all professional services rendered are documented and properly coded for billing. 
 
You will work under moderate supervision and direction as you continue to increase your proficiency and apply your skills to the completion of assigned tasks. 
 
The role you play 

  • Performing medical coding and abstracting of patient encounters, identifying diagnostic and procedural information, reportable elements, complications, and other procedures  

  • Following coding conventions, assigns codes for reimbursements 

  • Reviewing the medical record and identifying professional services in it to accurately optimize all professional services documented for billing  

  • Comparing physician-chosen CPT and ICD-10 codes to the physician’s documentation to substantiate the level of coding 

  • Reviewing and verifying that documentation supports diagnoses, procedures and treatment results. Auditing clinical documentation and coded data to validate that documentation supports services rendered for reimbursement and reporting purposes  

  • Analyzing medical records, identifying documentation deficiencies, identifying discrepancies and potential quality of care issues and billing issues 

  • Researching coding requirements and complying with regulatory requirements, utilizing guidelines 

  • (May) Researching, analyzing, recommending, and facilitating plan of action to correct discrepancies and prevent future coding errors 

  • Performing special projects or other duties as assigned 

  • Maintaining and increasing your skills, developing proficiency in the role  

  • Consulting with more senior team members on work approach and work product 

What we’re looking for 
 
We expect: 

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent 

  • Certification requirement: CPC, CIC, CCS or COC 

  • Facility coding experience required 

  • 1+ years medical coding experience  

  • Able to work successfully with moderate supervision and latitude for independent judgement 

  • Basic knowledge of coding, abstracting and relevant regulations 

  • Some experience with relevant software applications and systems, e.g. electronic medical record system  

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite products  

  • Demonstrated ability to audit and identify issues and resolve or escalate the issues as appropriate  

  • Able to work with team members, customers, providers and medical facility staff tactfully and effectively  

  • Organized with exceptional verbal and written communication skills 

  • Strong attention to detail 

  • Strong commitment to ethical behavior and complying with laws and regulations involved in the job  

  • Comfortable and accountable working in a remote work environment in which video -conference calls and virtual shared workspaces and tools are common  

  • Able to communicate tactfully and firmly with patients, providers, medical records staff and third-party insurers  

  • Must have a private, secure workspace available at home and access to internet with speed sufficient to perform the job  

We'd love to see: 

  • MEDITECH experience preferred  

  • University/college degree, or experience medical records, claims or billing areas is an asset 

  • Previous medical office experience preferred
