We are currently searching for a Coding Technician II to join our Coding Team at OrthoCarolina in Charlotte. This is a hybrid position.  

The Coding Technician II is responsible for accurate coding of 600+ general orthopedic surgery cases for assigned physicians. A coding tech II must be knowledgeable regarding assignment of EM coding for hospital services. Provide written feedback to physicians on coding changes or identified trends affecting their practice and in-services as requested by physicians or manager. Mentors less experienced coding team staff. Works with the business services department in the denial process. Works with office staff in scheduling/ precertification by providing CPT codes prior to surgery. Responsible for advanced coding projects and additional assignments as requested by Manager/Director.  

Other duties may include: 

  • Maintains a working knowledge of CPT and ICD-10 CM coding principles, governmental regulations, protocols and third-party requirements regarding billing and documentation guidelines by attending continuing education seminars and coding/reimbursement meetings. Enhances professional growth through a commitment to ongoing education programs, conferences and workshops. Attends required meetings and participates in committees upon request. 

  • Provides accurate answers to physician’s coding and/or billing questions on a timely basis. 

  • Assures that all services documented in the patient’s record are coded with the appropriate CPT-4 and ICD-10 CM codes.  When services are not documented appropriately, seeks to attain proper documentation in a timely matter. 

  • Coordinates with pre-certification office in providing CPT and ICD-10 codes prior to surgery date as well as surgical estimates when needed.  

  • Provides patients with surgical estimates and CPT codes for proposed surgery when requested. 

  • Mentors and meets with AR staff on a regular basis to assure maximum efficiency, reimbursement for properly documented services, identify coding denial trends and create new reimbursement strategies. 

  • Coordinates the proper coding of co-surgeries with other surgery groups in the community to ensure proper reimbursement and coding regulations are adhered to. 

  • Participates in area coders meetings and attends continuing education seminars on an as needed basis. 

  • Remains up-to-date on billing protocols, pricing methodologies, proper utilization of global edits and the CCI. Remains current with federal legislative changes that effect coding and reimbursement. 

  • Reviews, modifies and recommends changes to policies and procedures to improve coding and reimbursement efficiencies. 

  • Establishes and maintains a professional working relationship with physicians and staff. 

  • Responsible for working and resolving reimbursement reports on an ongoing basis. 

  • When necessary, begins the appeal process to capture maximum reimbursement according to contract, government and/or third-party payer guidelines. 

  • Participates in special projects and continuing education of staff as requested by manager and assists Compliance Officer with special projects and the continuing education of staff and physicians. 

  • Adheres to all regulations and policies set forth by the clinic, all governing agencies and third-party payers to ensure proper compliance and follows and adheres to month-end coding guideline. 

Education/Experience: 

  • High school diploma required. 

  • American Academy of Professional Coders Certification – CPC required.  

  • AAPC specialty certification in Orthopedics preferred. 

  • Valid driver’s license for travel as requested by manager.  

  • Certified Orthopedic Surgery Coder Certification (COSC) and/or a compliance/audit certification from an accredited organization preferred. 

  • Ten years’ experience in a surgical office, hospital, or other health-related enterprise as medical coder.  

  • Extensive knowledge of Medical and Medicaid coding guidelines.
