The surgical abstractor is responsible for obtaining surgical reports, tests, & evaluations and reviewing
them for compliance and coding by the most recent guidelines. The surgical abstractor will summarize
results to provide pertinent details to doctors and other medical professionals.
High School Diploma/GED
AAPC or AHIMA
• Knowledge of ICD-9 and CPT-4 coding systems
• Knowledge of commercial insurance, and other third-party payor regulations
• Codes complex surgical procedures to maximize reimbursement using CPT and HCPCS modifiers plus
all CPT, ICD-9 and HCPCS codes
• Abstract, interpret and analyze documentation to ensure coding appropriately reflects the documented
service meets compliance guidelines
• Know and apply all respective coding rules for services rendered, to include application of modifiers,
diagnosis/procedure relationship, correct coding initiative, non-physician provider requirements to
ensure accuracy
• Assist with pre-authorizations and any questions from the financial specialists with regards to ASC and
physician charges to encourage smooth intake process
• Provide cross training to other coding personnel within the department to promote consistency and
standardization
