Job Description

At Afford Health, we are building a customer-facing service that helps our clients organize, error check, and reconcile their medical bills with their insurance-provided explanation of benefits. We want to make patients feel confident that they’re not being over-charged, or under-reimbursed.

We are seeking an experienced Medical Bill Reviewer to join our growing team. You’ll be responsible for reviewing and analyzing medical claims and patient medical records, identifying errors and inconsistencies in our customer’s bills, advising on opportunities to automate processes to accelerate reviews, and helping create better tools to support negotiation workflows, so that issues can be communicated and quickly resolved. This role will be part-time to start.

About you:

You have an eye for catching inconsistencies and errors in medical bills. You will help interpret documents from healthcare providers and insurance companies, and identify when diagnosis codes and service codes aren’t aligned. You will find when modifiers have been used incorrectly, when codes aren’t supported by clinical documentation and flag inconsistencies between claims and health plan payments. If you’re passionate about healthcare affordability and helping patients, we would love to hear from you!

Requirements:

  • AAPC Professional Coding Certification (CPC/COC/CIC/CRC/CPMA)
  • Prior professional experience in auditing insurance claims, medical billing, or coding within a medical practice.
  • Familiarity handling PHI under HIPAA
  • Associates degree in a relevant field
  • Organized, analytical thinker, able to advise on best practices and help establish processes
  • This role is 100% remote - with preference for candidates that are located on the West Coast or can align work to the Pacific timezone. Candidates must have stable broadband internet access and personal computer
  • Ability to communicate clearly and explain concepts to non-healthcare experts
  • Collaborative problem solver who enjoys working in a team-based (remote) environment
  • Entrepreneurial thinker, interested in creating patient-facing tools to demystify healthcare
  • Minimum 20 hours a week

Bonus Points:

Experience working as a medical bill advocate, or similar role.
