Training alone is not enough to provide these results.  Success for our young people also requires real-world experience.  To provide this experience, Hopeworks runs real businesses, providing technology solutions for businesses in Web Design, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and Medical Coding, that not only help businesses achieve their goals, but also trains and employs young adults into high-demand, high wage careers.

Position & Responsibilities

The primary task of the Director of Medical Coding is to oversee all aspects of the medical coding department, ensuring the highest level of accuracy and compliance with current healthcare regulations and coding standards.

This role requires a blend of strategic leadership and operational management, focusing on optimizing productivity, enhancing quality control, and fostering professional development among staff.

 

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the medical coding team, including hiring, training, evaluating, and developing staff to ensure high performance and retention.

  • Develop and implement coding policies and procedures that comply with federal, state, and payer-specific regulations and guidelines.

  • Oversee the coding process for accuracy and efficiency, ensuring that all medical records are coded correctly according to ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS Level II, and other relevant standards.

  • Collaborate with the billing department to ensure seamless integration of coding and billing processes, enhancing revenue cycle management.

  • Monitor changes in coding guidelines, payer policies, and healthcare regulations, ensuring the coding team is educated and compliant with the latest standards.

  • Utilize data analytics to monitor coding performance, identify trends, and implement strategies to improve quality and productivity.

  • Manage coding audits, both internal and external, and implement corrective actions to address any identified issues.

  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, encouraging staff to stay current with coding certifications and professional development opportunities.

  • Willingness to work with young adults to train and support them as they develop professional skills

 

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management, Nursing, or a related field. Master’s degree preferred.

  • Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or other relevant coding certification required.

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in medical coding and billing, with at least 3 years in a leadership or management role.

  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology, ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS Level II, and the impact of coding on the revenue cycle.

  • Proven track record of leading and developing a successful coding team.

  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

  • Proficient in electronic medical records (EMR) systems and coding software.

  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with medical staff, management, and external partners.
