Job Description

Position Summary:
The Specialty Physician Coder plays a vital role in the healthcare revenue cycle by ensuring accurate and compliant medical coding for inpatient and outpatient services, with a particular emphasis on specialty coding in areas such as Radiation Oncology. Reporting to the Coding Compliance Manager, the Specialty Physician Coder reviews and analyzes specialty coding and billing for charge processing, contributing to effective reimbursement processes. The successful candidate will possess strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and expertise in medical coding standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Review and accurately code office visits, hospital encounters, and surgical procedures using ICD10, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.
  2. Collaborate with clinical teams and business center colleagues to address coding trends, irregularities, and necessary action items.
  3. Provide excellent customer service by addressing a moderate volume of incoming emails and phone calls related to coding inquiries.
  4. Maintain patient confidentiality and ensure compliance with HIPAA regulations.
  5. Uphold a professional demeanor and demonstrate strong interpersonal communication skills in all interactions.
  6. Utilize Microsoft Office suite and Epic software proficiently to support coding activities and documentation processes.
  7. Demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning and professional development in the field of medical coding.

Minimum Requirements:

Experience:

  • 3 years' experience working in a hospital or physician's office as a medical coder, with exposure to a variety of specialty coding scenarios.
  • 1 year's experience specifically as a specialty coder in one of the following areas: Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Medical Hematology/Oncology, OBGYN, Pulmonology, or Radiation Oncology.

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Expert knowledge of ICD10, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.
  • Strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
  • Experience with Epic software highly desired.

Education/Licensure/Certification:

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • CPC, CCS, or equivalent certification required.
  • Specialty coding certification highly desired.
