Certified Professional Coder - Various Specialties

Job Description

About the role
You will join a team that partners with healthcare organizations to strengthen their revenue cycle. As a coder, you’ll deliver accurate, compliant coding for clients who count on you to get it right. Many of our client sites have limited on-site coding support, so you’ll work independently, communicate clearly with providers, and own the quality of your work.
This is a 100% remote, 12-month W2 contract role with flexible scheduling between 6am and 6pm in your local time zone (40 hours a week). Successful candidate could have the opportunity to extend or convert to full-time employment. You will work alongside a growing team with opportunities for cross-training.

What you’ll do
  • Assign accurate diagnosis, procedure, and service codes using ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS (where applicable), CPT, and HCPCS Level II.
  • Review provider documentation for accuracy and completeness, and apply payer, CMS, and organizational coding guidelines.
  • Sequence codes and apply modifiers correctly according to government and payer rules.
  • Query providers and clinical staff to clarify unclear or incomplete documentation.
  • Identify documentation gaps and trends, and share feedback to help improve provider documentation.
  • Resolve coding-related edits, holds, and denials in the client’s billing workflow.
  • Protect patient confidentiality and follow HIPAA and organizational security standards.
  • Stay current on coding guidelines, payer policies, and regulatory changes.

Specialty focus (you’ll be aligned to at least one of these)
Ambulatory (Rural Health Clinic): Code a broad mix of outpatient clinic and procedural services, including E/M leveling, in-office procedures, injections and infusions, and drug (J-code) reporting. Strong modifier and NCCI edit knowledge is key.

OB/GYN (profee): Code obstetric and gynecologic services, including global obstetric package rules, antepartum, delivery, and postpartum care, gynecologic procedures, ultrasound, preventive visits, and contraceptive services.

Primary Care (profee): Code family medicine, internal medicine, and pediatric visits, including E/M leveling under current medical decision making and time guidelines, preventive and annual wellness visits, chronic care management, immunizations, and accurate capture of chronic conditions.

Cardiothoracic (profee): Code cardiac, thoracic, and vascular surgical and procedural services from operative reports, including multi-procedure reporting, surgeon and assistant modifiers, global periods, and bundling rules. ICD-10-PCS experience is a plus.

What you bring
  • 3+ years of professional medical coding experience, with demonstrated depth in your specialty area
  • Active coding credential (CPC, CCS, or equivalent through AAPC or AHIMA)
  • Strong working knowledge of CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, modifiers, and NCCI edits
  • Experience coding in an EHR or encoder environment and comfort learning new systems quickly
  • Ability to work independently and manage your own productivity and quality targets
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including in provider queries
  • Sound problem-solving, organization, and time management
  • Proven experience coding high volume encounters per day while maintaining high accuracy

Preferred
  • Hands-on experience with Meditech and/or Epic
  • Experience with coding-related denial resolution and claim edits
  • Familiarity with remote, multi-client work
  • Experience coding in Rural Health Clinic or Critical Access Hospital environments is highly desired
  • Previous experience coding both facility and professional charts is highly desired
