Radiation Oncology Coder

Location: Remote (U.S.) — we are not currently hiring in Hawaii, Alaska, California, or New York.

SUMMARY

The Radiation Oncology Coder is responsible for ensuring all services rendered are captured timely, coded accurately, and meet documentation requirements when processed through the EMR and Billing Systems. Demonstrates working knowledge of all facets of role, relevant regulations, and organizational and departmental policies and procedures for Radiation Oncology services.

This individual works independently while also collaborating with the denials team to resolve coding-related denials and works closely with the authorizations team to ensure proper authorizations are requested to meet and exceed customer expectations and needs.


PRIMARY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Code radiation oncology services across the full course of treatment: consultation, clinical treatment planning, simulation, dosimetry, physics, treatment delivery (IMRT, SBRT/SRS, IGRT, 3D conformal), brachytherapy, and weekly treatment management
  • Assign accurate CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10-CM codes to the highest level of specificity
  • Review and release held charges before claims go out, typically within three business days
  • Confirm that documentation, dictations, and physician orders support each code billed, and flag documentation trends to the Coding Manager
  • Maintain a coding plan for each patient's course of treatment so charges are captured completely and on time
  • Stay current on NCCI edits, Medicare LCDs and articles, and payer bulletins
  • Partner with the denials team to resolve coding-related denials and AR questions
  • Collaborate with the authorization team to confirm authorizations match physician orders and any mid-treatment changes, and flag gaps
  • Support internal and compliance audits by reviewing findings and responding as delegated
  • Help train new coders and provide coverage during team absences
  • Meet team goals for charge accuracy, month-end close, charge lag, and quality review
  • Understand the difference between Professional charges (Pro-fee/office setting) and Technical charges (facility-based) for hospital IP patients who are wheeled over.

Requirements:

EDUCATION / CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • CPC (AAPC) or CCS (AHIMA) or ROCC certification (required) 


EXPERIENCE

  • Proficient knowledge of medical terminology, ICD-10, CPT coding, NCCI, and Medicare coverage policy required. 
  • Minimum of 3 years of radiation oncology coding experience required.
  • Experience with oncology EMR or billing systems such as [ARIA / MOSAIQ / systems used]
