Medical Coding Manager

Job Summary

University Medical Billing (UMB) is a fully remote department that is viewed as the premier billing office for the University of Utah School of Medicine, serving over 1,800 providers and 30 different specialties across Utah and surrounding states. As the Medical Coding Manager, you will manage medical coding operations to ensure accurate and compliant coding of medical records for an organization that provides healthcare patient services; oversee and train coding staff; design, implement, and document coding policies and processes; conduct audits and evaluate operations to identify opportunities for improvements. This is a first-level manager role: manages the activities of supervisors and/or individual contributors; responsible for hiring, firing, performance appraisals, and pay reviews; broad knowledge of the field with demonstrated leadership skills.

Employment is contingent on the successful completion of a background check and the adherence to departmental policies, including UMB's Telecommuting Agreement which requires a distraction-free and HIPAA compliant workplace, cameras on for all virtual calls/meetings, and the ability to work during office hours or assigned shift (M-F, approximately 8am to 5pm Mountain Time) regardless of what time zone you live in. Additionally, new hires are required to provide their own monitors (two) and reliable internet service.

Responsibilities

  • Executes Strategy
      • Implement coding and charge capture strategies that align to organizational goals.
      • Monitor overall team outcomes and workload distribution, adjusting plans to meet key objectives.
      • Represent team across the department, collaborate to deliver on objectives
  • Oversees Team
    • Ensure team satisfaction
    • Monitor team performance, conduct assessments, support individual learning and development objectives
    • Collaborate with leadership team and staff to ensure that PreAR days do not exceed targeted thresholds.
    • Support and direct supervisor team to manage multiple deadlines
    • Provide recommendations on staffing needs
  • Customer Needs & Satisfaction
    • Support customer (physicians, departments, payers, etc) satisfaction and ensure appropriate follow-through to improve the quality of the coding services provided by the team.
    • Ensure coding team accuracy across all service lines average greater than 92%.

Minimum Qualifications
EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).
Manager, Medical Coding: Requires a bachelor's (or equivalency) + 6 years or a master's (or equivalency) + 4 years of directly related work experience.


Preferences
Preferred Qualifications

    • 6 years' experience leading, directing, and evaluating the work of a team to meet organizational objectives.
    • 7 years' experience coding, clinical, or billing experience with documentation requirements related to regulatory reimbursement rules, regulations, reimbursement systems (federal, state and payer specific), and health insurance processing is required.
    • AAPC or AHIMA certification required.
    • Proven experience leading and working effectively in a remote environment.
    • Proficiency in software applications (EPIC, iCentra, etc.)
