Summary:
Responsible for capturing data from medical records for the purpose of reimbursement, statistics, research/studies, resource allocation and benchmarking, as well as works daily with the CDI Auditors, provides education and is part of the clinical documentation Improvement process.
Responsibilities:
Assigns ICD-10 diagnosis and procedure codes to IP and/or OP accounts/Applies CPT codes to outpatient accounts.
Determines appropriate sequencing of codes based on coding guidelines.
Identifies insufficient/incomplete documentation within the medical record and solicits response from physicians by queries or flagging with deficiencies.
Works closely with the CDI auditors to obtain clinical documentation to support appropriate reimbursement as well as increase the severity of illness. Collaborates on appropriate education to provide back to team and providers.
Communicates with the business office and monitors edits to resolve coding issues related to billing in a timely manner.
Serves as a resource to other hospital personnel with respect to coding.
Takes an active role in self-development.

Education Requirements:
• Associate in healthcare, Health Information Technology
• Graduate from Health Information Technology
Licensure/Certifications:
• RHIT, RHIA and/or CCS AHIMA approved.
Professional Experience Requirements:
• 1 year of experience in Healthcare/Medical - Medical Coder
• Experience in ICD-10- CM and ICD-10-PCS
