Lead Medical Biller

Job Summary:

Mercy Urgent Care is excited to welcome an experienced Lead Medical Biller to join our team in Asheville, North Carolina. This position blends hands-on billing work with educational and mentoring responsibilities, and plays a vital role in keeping high-quality compassionate care accessible to the communities of Western North Carolina.

How You'll Contribute:
  • Prepare and submit insurance claims to a variety of payers, including private insurance, government programs, corporate accounts, and special programs
  • Verify insurance coverage and eligibility, manage patient accounts and payments, and oversee medical collections
  • Research and resolve denied or unpaid claims, submit appeals with supporting documentation, and track outcomes
  • Answer patient billing questions, explain statements in clear, supportive language, and collaborate with providers to resolve billing or coding discrepancies
  • Maintain accurate billing records in the EMR/EHR and stay current on ICD-10/CPT coding, payer policies, and regulations (including HIPAA)
  • Serve as a lead for the billing team by training, mentoring, and supporting staff, identifying process improvements, and promoting consistency, accuracy, and continuous improvement

What You Bring:
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 3-5 years of experience in medical billing or insurance claims processing, with strong claims management and payer relations skills
  • Proficiency with medical billing software and EHR systems, and strong working knowledge of ICD-10 and CPT codes
  • Proven ability to train and mentor billing staff, with excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills
  • Comfort working both independently and as part of a team in a fast-faced, mission-driven environment
