Certified Hospital Based Surgery Coder

Job Description

Overview Review provider documentation and assign ICD-10-CM, CPT/HCPCS codes as appropriate based on official coding guidelines. Research and take action on any coding/claim edits. Focus on complex outpatient hospital based (Observation, Emergency Department, Wound, Ambulatory Surgery) and provider based complex procedural services (surgery, procedures, wound). Responsibilities Follow all coding policies, procedures and standard operating procedures. Use encoding software and reference materials to assign appropriate codes. Provide provider-driven coding: review and accept or revise code selection based on documentation and guidelines. Provide non–provider driven coding: review documentation and assign codes based on guidelines. Review coding edits and resolve them accurately so encounters can be sent to claims. Send clear, respectful communications to providers in inbox or queries when additional information is needed. Identify and communicate to Coding Lead/Supervisor/Manager any issues related to documentation, coding or systems that may impact quality, compliance, or productivity. Perform work queue duties as assigned by Coding Lead/Supervisor/Manager. Maintain coding quality and productivity standards. Actively engage and contribute in performance improvement initiatives, department meetings and other meetings as required. Qualifications High School Diploma required. Associate or Bachelor Degree in Health Information or a healthcare related discipline preferred. Experience: 3 years procedural coding required for CCS-P, CCA, or CPC providers. None required for RHIA, RHIT, CCS. Licenses and Certification Required: RHIA, RHIT, or CCS (hospital) for hospital-based coding. Required: RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, CCA, or CPC (provider based) for provider-based coding. Physical Activities Intermittent hand manipulation. Intermittent lifting and carrying of 20 pounds.
