Schedule : Monday - Friday (40 hrs/wk), 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Primary Purpose : Manages the daily operation of the Biomedical Service Engineering department during all hours of operation. Ensures that procedures are performed according to section protocol. Provides technical expertise on improving the quality of testing through improved performance of instrumentation and reduction in downtime.
Essential Functions
Provides technical expertise for calibration, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, validation, installation, and evaluation of laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
Oversees maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and preventive-maintenance planning for large-scale automation systems.
Maintains current technical knowledge through training, professional networking, continuing education, and review of relevant technical resources.
Develops and maintains compliant procedures for equipment maintenance, repair, and support that meet laboratory needs and minimize downtime.
Maintains accurate, accessible service records, including labor, materials, repair history, and documentation required for regulatory compliance.
Maintains accurate inventory databases and maintenance schedules for laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
Maintains critical spare-parts inventory to support timely repair of laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
Serves as the liaison between Biomedical Service Engineering, Automation, IT, laboratory operations, and instrument vendors as needed.
Manages and supports department personnel through regular communication, coaching, performance feedback, staff meetings, and appropriate documentation of employee development, counseling, or corrective action needs.
Assesses staffing needs and supports recruitment, interviewing, selection, and hiring of qualified personnel.
Directs department training, safety education, competency monitoring, and performance oversight to ensure work is performed according to established policies, procedures, and accreditation requirements.
Manages staffing schedules, coverage, timekeeping review, and related reporting in alignment with service needs and ARUP policies.
Supports management with strategic planning, budgeting, workload analysis, performance standards, merit recommendations, and timely reporting.
Evaluates equipment lifecycle costs, service needs, and replacement options to support purchasing and standardization decisions.
Supports evaluation, negotiation, and management of service contracts and future equipment purchases.

Physical and Other Requirements
Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.
Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
Mobility: The person in this position needs to occasionally move between work sites and inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
Communicate: Frequently communicate with others.
PPE: Biohazard laboratory environment that requires use of personal protective equipment in accordance with CDC and OSHA regulations and company policies.
ARUP Policies and Procedures: To conduct self in compliance with all ARUP Policies and Procedures.
Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
Vision: Having close, far, and peripheral visual acuity to perform a variety of tasks such as make general observations of depth and distance.
Fine Motor Control: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
Education
Required: Associates Degree or better in Other: See Notes or related field.
Preferred: Bachelor's Degree or better in Medical Laboratory Sciences or related field.
Experience
Required: Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Engineering, Biological/Chemical Science (or related field) with 6 years of relevant experience, OR Associate’s degree in a related field with 8 years of relevant experience, OR 10 years of directly related experience in biomedical, laboratory, or field service engineering.
Relevant experience includes biomedical equipment service, laboratory instrumentation support, or field service engineering in regulated environments. Experience should demonstrate progressive responsibility, including increasing complexity of supported systems, expanded scope of service, and advancement toward technical leadership.
Preferred: Previous supervisory/leadership experience.
Experience as an engineer in maintaining and troubleshooting ARUP developed automation systems.
Familiarity with regulatory and quality standards (e.g., CAP, CLIA, FDA, ISO).
