Supervisor Medical Technology
Supervises medical lab personnel of St. Joseph's Medical Center Clinical Laboratory. Plans, organizes and delineates duties and responsibilities of personnel under his/her supervision. Assumes responsibility for instituting new procedures, establishes and maintains the quality control program, directs training of new personnel, maintains supplies, keeps abreast of new technical and theoretical procedures, disseminates departmental information, maintains all procedural directions and ascertains the reliability for all test results issuing from his/her sections or the laboratory when under his/her supervision. Also performs the duties of a clinical laboratory technologist. This position treats/cares for patients of all ages. This position requires the full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the Mission of the Organization. The employee shall support the Organization's strategic plan and the goals and direction of the Performance Improvement Plan (PIP).
Demonstrates the ability to safely and competently perform tasks and procedures according to Medical Center policy and procedure. Including, but not limited to:
- Plans, directs and supervises Hematology/Coagulation/Urinalysis relative to personnel, programs and operations
- Responsible for interviewing, evaluation, motivation, discipline, recommending for hiring, promotion or termination, department's employees.
- Maintains technical standards as prescribed by JCAHO, CAP and the State of California.
- Establishes and maintains a quality assurance/control program.
- Ascertains the reliability of test results being used.
- Ensures all equipment is maintained.
- Establishes and maintains all procedural directions.
- Institutes new procedures.
- Disseminates procedural information.
- Establishes and maintains an intra-section inventory and procurement program for supplies.
- Keeps abreast of changes and techniques in his/her field
- Recommends actions to modify equipment, purchase new equipment and upgrade facilities within the laboratory.
- Maintains communications and relations with the staffs of the laboratories, nursing, physicians, and other hospital departments and the public.
- Complies with hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
- Performs the duties of a clinical laboratory technologist.
Management specific duties include:
- Assures departmental competency and compliance to all regulatory, accreditation and hospital standards of care.
- Maintains adequate staffing for daily needs reflecting cost efficiency, Recruits, hires and releases staff, Assigns staff and workload, respecting changing priorities in daily operations, Provides counsel, monitors performance, directs orientation, provides guidance and constructively influences staff morale, Carries out corrective and/or disciplinary action as necessary, Provides cross-training programs to utilize staff at highest productive standards possible, Participates in sponsoring students in the department and fostering relationships with associated educational programs.
- Ensures control of supplies and equipment with emphasis on proper use, safety and cost containment.
- Develops, implements and monitors department safety management programs which includes Workers' Compensation, patient safety and written safety procedures specific to departmental hazards, chemical hygiene, MSDS, accident investigations, safety training, bi-annual inspections, and safety policy enforcement procedures.
- Maintains confidentiality of information deemed confidential and takes steps to assure processes that protect confidentiality. Reports, investigates and completes correction plan within the required timelines. Monitors the effectiveness of correction plan.
- Participates in activities that promote professional growth and development and maintains current knowledge base in all areas of responsibility.
- Participates in the planning, development and implementation of organizational operational and strategic goals.
- Collaborates as appropriate with other CHW facilities on routine and special projects.
- Evaluates staff in a timely manner following hospital policy.
