Company Overview
Health Partners Management Group, Inc (HPMG) is a government contracting company in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. HPMG is bidding on a federal contract for several coding positions. You would be a W-2 employee with HPMG, not a government employee.
Summary
Responsible for assigning accurate ICD codes for diagnoses and procedures. The Medical Severity - Diagnostic Related Group (MS-DRG) is automatically assigned by the grouper software for inpatient stays. Inpatient coders may also assign accurate ICD diagnoses, CPT and HCPCS codes, modifiers, and quantities from medical record documentation for professional services (rounds or IBWA encounters). They train and educate military staff on coding issues and play a significant role in coding compliance activities.
Mandatory Knowledge and Skills
Excellent computer and communication skills for provider and staff interactions.
Knowledge of anatomy/physiology, disease processes, medical terminology, coding guidelines (inpatient), documentation requirements, medications, reimbursement guidelines; and encoder experience.
Ability to handle multiple projects and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.
Education / Certification
Acceptable certifications include Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Certified Outpatient Coder (COC), Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC), and Certified Coder Specialist (CCS). RHIT and RHIA from AHIMA may count toward either the professional services or institutional coding requirement, but not both, unless the individual has the required experience for the specific position. E&M coding certifications (CEMC, NAMA Certified Evaluation and Management Auditor) are waived. Other certifications are considered on a case‑by‑case basis.
Continued Education Requirements
Medical coders must obtain the required continued education hours to maintain their current national certifications.
Experience
Minimum of five (5) years of coding or auditing experience in two or more medical specialties within the past ten years, or a minimum of three (3) years of experience in a military treatment facility, with at least one (1) year of performance in the specialty documented.
Performance Outcomes
Accurately assign diagnosis and procedure codes for inpatient facility and professional services, ensuring completeness, productivity, and timeliness according to DOD standards.
Assign DRGs for inpatient stays and encode discharge records with correct DRG, Relative Weighted Product, and Relative Value Units to support accurate reimbursement.
Perform coding tasks within MHS GENESIS and other military coding systems (e.g., 3M Encompass 360, Joint Legacy Viewer).
Assist with ambulatory and outpatient coding when required.
Research and resolve coding edit failures.
Apply ICD codes for diagnoses and procedures for inpatient stays.
Identify and extract relevant information from medical records for audits and special studies.
Interact with military staff to ensure documentation supports coding assignments and provide educational in‑services and training sessions.
Maintain a delinquency report of missing documentation for inpatient records.
Ensure all required components of the inpatient medical record are present, accurate, and compiled with DOD and accreditation requirements.
Assign accurate E/M, ICD, CPT, and HCPCS codes and modifiers for attending physician encounters.
Monitor lost IBWA/rounds records and report to management.
Adhere to coding guidelines, ensuring ethical, accurate, and complete coding.
Monitor regulatory and policy changes affecting coded information.
Maintain technical currency through continuing education and training.
Review documents for inconsistencies or discrepancies that could lead to inaccurate coding or legal issues.
Develop and submit queries to clarify provider documentation, monitor responses, and assign codes based on outcomes.
Support coding compliance with due diligence and appropriate research.
Resolve coding edit failures in MHS GENESIS.
Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Advanced knowledge of ICD‑CM, PCS, HCPCS, and CPT for institutional and professional services coding.
Advanced understanding of reimbursement systems, including PPS, DRGs, APCs, and RBRVS.
In‑depth knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and disease processes.
Practical knowledge of medical specialties, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, ancillary services (laboratory, dental, occupational therapy, physical therapy, radiology), and revenue cycle concepts.
Understanding of government regulations on coding, reimbursement guidelines, fraud prevention, and audit principles, including CMS guidance and NCCI edits.
Knowledge of clinical documentation improvement and continuous process improvement.
Familiarity with EHR systems and workflows related to medical coding.

Work Environment / Physical Requirements
The work is primarily sedentary. Requires prolonged walking, standing, sitting, or bending, and may include carrying or lifting medical records daily. Use of one or more computer programs and monitors is required for efficient duty performance.
