Hilo Benioff Medical Center is seeking a highly skilled Coder III to provide advanced coding expertise within the Health Information Management Department. This position is responsible for independently assigning complex ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT-4, and HCPCS codes, abstracting clinical data, supporting coding compliance initiatives, and serving as a technical resource for coding staff and clinical departments. The Coder III plays a critical role in maintaining coding integrity, optimizing reimbursement, and supporting organizational quality and regulatory objectives. Key Responsibilities Assign and sequence complex ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT-4, and HCPCS codes for hospital and outpatient services in accordance with official coding guidelines and regulatory requirements Review and analyze medical records for completeness, accuracy, clinical documentation integrity, and appropriate reimbursement opportunities Abstract clinical data and prepare reports, statistical analyses, and research data to support operational, quality, and regulatory initiatives Collaborate with providers to resolve documentation discrepancies and ensure accurate clinical representation within the medical record Research and resolve coding denials, audit findings, and compliance concerns while supporting revenue cycle performance and regulatory readiness Provide technical guidance and mentoring to Coder I and Coder II staff and serve as a coding subject matter expert for complex coding scenarios Experience, Education, Certifications, and Licensure High school diploma or equivalent required Completion of ICD-10 training, coursework, or classes within the past two (2) years required Two (2) years of specialized health information management experience in a hospital or allied healthcare setting Two (2) years of coding experience assigning ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT-4, and HCPCS codes One of the following certifications required: Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC) No licensure required The ideal candidate possesses advanced knowledge of inpatient and outpatient coding methodologies, disease processes, pharmacology, clinical documentation requirements, and reimbursement systems. This individual demonstrates exceptional analytical skills, coding accuracy, regulatory knowledge, and the ability to function as a resource and mentor within a high-performing Health Information Management team. Pre-Employment Health Requirements Offers of employment will be contingent on successfully passing a pre-employment examination, which includes a drug screen and other regulatory medical requirements such as, but not limited to, a tuberculosis (TB) screen. The cost for drug screening and blood draw for QuantiFERON and Titers, shall be borne by the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation.
