Hilo Benioff Medical Center is seeking a detail-oriented and analytical Coder I to join our Health Information Management team. In this role, you will assign medical codes for outpatient services, ensuring accurate documentation, regulatory compliance, and appropriate reimbursement. This position plays a critical role in supporting the financial and clinical integrity of the organization through high-quality coding and medical record review.
Key Responsibilities
Review, analyze, and assign ICD-10-CM, CPT-4, and HCPCS codes for outpatient, clinic, emergency department, laboratory, radiology, and other services
Ensure coding accuracy, completeness, and compliance with current coding guidelines, payer requirements, and regulatory standards
Analyze medical documentation and collaborate with providers and departments to clarify documentation when needed
Meet productivity and quality standards while maintaining coding deadlines and supporting accounts receivable performance goals
Research and resolve coding denials, audit findings, and coding discrepancies to minimize reimbursement delays and denials
Serve as a coding resource for internal departments and external coding vendors while supporting quality improvement initiatives
Experience, Education, Certifications, and Licensure
High school diploma or equivalent required
Completion of ICD-10 training, coursework, or classes within the past two (2) years required
One (1) year of health information management experience in a hospital or allied healthcare setting involving medical records, medical terminology, coding, filing, indexing, and record analysis
One (1) year of coding experience assigning ICD-CM/PCS, CPT-4, and HCPCS codes for diagnoses, procedures, and services
One of the following certifications required: Certified Coding Associate (CCA), Certified Professional Coder Apprentice (CPC-A), or Certified Outpatient Coder Apprentice (COC-A)
No licensure required
The ideal candidate will possess strong knowledge of medical terminology, ICD-10-CM, CPT-4, and HCPCS coding systems, along with excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills. Success in this role requires attention to detail, the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment, and a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of accuracy, confidentiality, and customer service.

* Rates listed for paid holidays, vacation and sick days are for 1.0 Full Time Equivalent (FTE) positions assigned to 8 hour shifts. Accruals for these benefits are otherwise prorated based on FTE.
Pre-Employment Health Requirements
Offers of employment will be contingent on successfully passing a pre-employment examination, which includes a drug screen and other regulatory medical requirements such as, but not limited to, a tuberculosis (TB) screen. The cost for drug screening and blood draw for QuantiFERON and Titers, shall be borne by the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation.
