Hilo Benioff Medical Center is seeking an experienced Coder II to support the accurate coding, abstraction, and management of clinical information across outpatient and physician-based services. This role serves as an independent coding professional responsible for ensuring compliance with coding standards, optimizing reimbursement, and supporting the integrity of the medical record through detailed analysis and collaboration with providers and clinical teams. Key Responsibilities Assign and sequence ICD-10-CM, CPT-4, and HCPCS codes for physician-based, outpatient, clinic, urgent care, emergency department, laboratory, radiology, and ancillary services Independently review and analyze medical records to ensure complete, accurate, and compliant documentation and coding Identify documentation deficiencies and collaborate with providers to clarify diagnoses, procedures, and services when necessary Abstract clinical data and compile statistical information to support quality improvement, operational reporting, regulatory requirements, and reimbursement activities Research coding denials, respond to audit inquiries, and ensure compliance with payer, regulatory, and coding guideline requirements Serve as a coding resource to providers, clinical departments, and revenue cycle staff while supporting process improvement initiatives Experience, Education, Certifications, and Licensure High school diploma or equivalent required Completion of ICD-10 training, coursework, or classes within the past two (2) years required One (1) year of specialized health information management experience in a hospital or allied healthcare setting Two (2) years of coding experience assigning ICD-10-CM, CPT-4, and HCPCS codes for diagnoses, procedures, and services One of the following certifications required: Certified Coding Specialist – Physician-Based (CCS-P) Certified Professional Coder (CPC) Certified Outpatient Coder (COC) No licensure required The ideal candidate possesses strong knowledge of physician-based coding practices, anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, reimbursement methodologies, and regulatory requirements. Successful candidates demonstrate the ability to work independently, maintain coding accuracy, and effectively communicate with providers and interdisciplinary teams.
