Responsibilities Timely and accurate coding and abstracting of inpatient visits.
Review inpatient encounter documentation for diagnoses, treatments, and services.
Perform daily coding and abstracting using ICD‑10 Code sets and DRG Grouping systems.
Validate MS‑DRG and APR‑DRG assignments for appropriateness to the encounter.
Weekly coding of inpatient interim bill requests.
Review Clinical Documentation Specialists’ notes and queries to ensure capture of queried conditions.
Validate admission diagnosis assignment and coordinate correction with Case Management personnel when appropriate.
Identify documentation issues that may lead to incorrect coding, billing, and quality metrics.
Communicate issues to Clinical Documentation Specialists for clarification and/or resolution.
Facilitate accurate Hospital Acquired Conditions reporting with Infection Control and/or coordinate retrospective query with the CDI team.
Perform research or seek assistance from Nosology, CHA, and the American Hospital Association on complex coding cases.
Document findings and educate the team on coding guidance.
Make recommendations on Epic coding and SVC edits to prevent coding, billing, IHA, and claim edits.
Maintain quality standards of AHA, AMA, CMS, OIG, and TJC pertaining to coding and reimbursement.
Stay current in coding changes by reading, maintaining CEU hours, and attending education sessions related to coding and health information management.
Train and orient new employees.
Assist with testing and implementation of system/product changes and upgrades.
Perform other duties as assigned by the coding manager or the director.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Must possess a minimum of CCS, RHIA, or RHIT credential.
Must maintain credential status by completing continuing education requirements.
Must have completed and continue to demonstrate proficiency in a coding program curriculum, including full courses in Medical Terminology, Anatomy and Physiology, Medical Sciences, Pharmacology, ICD‑10‑CM, CPT, and Healthcare Data Content Structures.
Must pass the Lurie Children’s Coding Exam with a minimum of 90% score.
Minimum of one year of prior hospital coding experience required; inpatient APR‑DRG experience preferred.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and navigation of an EMR.
Typing speed of at least 30 words per minute.
Effective communication with all Lurie staff and external contacts, including vendors and patients/visitors.
Ability to handle multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and cope with the pressures of a results‑deadline oriented position.
Education Associate’s Degree in Health Administration (Required) or completion of an AHIMA‑approved RHIT, RHIA, or CCS program.
Pay Range $31.50‑$51.50 per hour.
