University Physicians, formerly known as the Medical Practice Income Plan (MPIP), was created in 1974 within the School of Medicine at the University of Missouri-Columbia to govern the clinical practice of its faculty members. An administrative office was established in 1978 to provide billing services and administrative support for the clinical activities of the medical faculty at the University. Prior to this time, the billing office at the University of Missouri-Columbia Hospital and Clinics (UMCHC) processed all the billing activities for physician fees.
With 678 physicians and 311 APPs trained in more than 94 specialties and sub-specialties, UP is the largest group practice plan in Mid-Missouri. Our physicians serve as faculty members at the University of Missouri School of Medicine, teaching medical students and residents and conducting research. This allows our physicians to provide the latest advances in medicine. These same physicians offer primary and specialty care at MU Health Care and also at a number of clinics in Columbia and in communities throughout the state. We are known around the world for breakthroughs and advances in minimally invasive surgery, pediatrics, cancer care, cardiovascular care, orthopaedic surgery, trauma, women’s health and much more.
